Kellogg's uses the PRIMS system to produce perfect Pop Tarts and Nutri-Grain Bars

At Kellogg's the PRIMS system controls all the hand scaling (100+ ingredients), automated pre-scaling (50 ingredients), and the entire bulk automated batching system (5 mixers with 10 automated bulk ingredients). Their original goal was to replace the existing Schick batching system, which had failed several times resulting in extensive downtime, but the PRIMS system has delivered benefits that were not a a part of the original justification for the project.

The system, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a a week, uses wired and wireless bar-code scanners. Not only has the PRIMS system proved to be extremely reliable, but it has the added advantage of allowing production to continue even in the event a failure of the PRIMS server. In the case of such a failure, the PLCs controlling the attached plant-floor equipment function in stand-alone mode until the PRIMS server can be restored.
